Computer Handyman

Ok….I think I’m going to start offering my services as a “computer handyman” of sorts. I don’t really want to be tied down to a job with a specific office or company, (or maybe I would?). I’d rather work on the occasional problem that creeps up on your computer. I’m not real interested in working on emergencies either. I don’t want someone calling me and expecting me to show up in the next 15 minutes. I do work full time elsewhere, so I would have to schedule accordingly.

I’m not “Microsoft Certified” in anything. I don’t have certificates hanging all over my wall to prove my accomplishments. So why would you call me for help? I’ve been tapping away on a computer keyboard since 1984. I’ve spent the last 18 years working for a local technology company where my world revolves around a PC and the internet. I’ve spent the last year learning a little about creating websites and blogs and everything that goes along with it. I’ve also learned a bit about “search engine optimization”, (SEO). If you’ve never heard of the term and you have a website for your business, then you might want to check into it. I don’t claim to be an SEO guru, but again…I could probably offer some advice. Need help with Google Adwords campaigns? I’ve been there too. I’m kind-of a “jack of all trades” I guess you could say. Learned most of what I know by digging in and doing it.

I’m familiar with Microsoft Word & Excel as well as a few other MS products, (Outlook of course). Not interested in long term commitments. More interested in helping out and making a little side money. Rates would be fair and work would be done at your house/place of business. No need to drag your computer to a shop for help with something.

Some examples of things that I could possibly help with:

  • “I’ve got these crazy messages that keep popping up on my screen about some error? How do I get rid of these?”
  • “I’d like to learn how to use this new software I bought but I don’t know who can help?”
  • “I want to have my own blog but don’t know where to start?”
  • “I put some pictures on my computer and now I can’t find them?”

I don’t know that I want to get into the world of actual computer repair, replacing hardware and performing upgrades. I might do some of that on a “case by case” basis, but it’s not really my area of expertise.

If interested, you can always fill out my contact form and let me know what you’re needing help with. I’d be glad to discuss.

  16. This is a good idea. Myself, I have fifteen years in the medical field, then was an Internet developer for a large company and then was CIO of a mortgage lender in Tampa for six years until they just recently went out of business. I am starting up a computer consulting company for two reasons, first I am tired of being totally out of control as what happens when the company you work for goes out of business. Secondly, everybody is afraid of hiring now, because business has no real idea what will change next or how stable anything is right now with all the change. Not to get into politics here, just remembering the old wagon trains that crossed the West. They could change one wheel at at a time on the wagons without stopping the wagon train. For some reason now, we are on jacks with all four wheels off the wagons. I don’t get it, but that’s just me I guess.

  18. Sounds like a great idea – with your experience you should be able to deliver a valuable service whilst making a decent income for yourself.
Don’t put too many boundaries on what you do; I don’t think you’ll be able to ignore the hardware side of things entirely.
