The Truth Is; Sex Does Sell

About a year ago when I was beginning to play around with affiliate marketing and running some PPC campaigns, I decided to try WordTracker for some “long tail” keywords. Out of curiosity, I thought I’d check some of the popular searches to see what people were really looking for on the web. That’s when I learned the shocking truth….sex really does sell!

I’m not sure why I was so surprised. I consider myself a pretty “seasoned” web surfer and I’ve seen a lot of stuff in my day, but I guess I wasn’t really prepared to see how often people search for some of these sexual related terms? I suppose I’m a little naive and old fashioned. I used to shrug off comments about the “moral decay of society”, but I think I’m beginning to understand? This isn’t a few hundred searches here and there. This is millions and millions of searches by millions and millions of people, for things that would make a lot of us turn red with embarrassment! It’s no wonder that porn sites are so prevalent across the web. It’s the simple law of supply and demand. People are looking for it, so there those that are going to supply it for a price. I’m sure there are quite a few people that have become internet millionaires through their porn sites.

I don’t advocate censorship of the web or censorship in general. I think you’d be wasting your energy if you tried to censor it, and quite frankly I think it would be next to impossible to do and enforce. Porn sites have simply become a part of today’s internet as far as I’m concerned, and the best we can do is to try and avoid them, (if that’s what you want).

My concern is my kids being exposed to certain things when they start using the internet. I think the web can be a fabulous learning tool….it’s just that there are far too many things I “don’t” want my kids learning from it. That’s an issue that most every parent is facing these days.

Got a thought or opinion? Let’s hear it….
Have a good day!
Chris

  2. When you are on myspace, the dating banners (mainly True)… are pushing as hard as they can for clicks. Especially the new flash/video based ones. Very smart… but you are right, sex pulls clicks/sales.

  4. It’s been around since the beginning of time. Absolute censorship is very idealistic, but I think it’s very important to restrict these information from minors.

  6. LOL…yah I noticed that in WT too.

Put up all the golf websites you want…the
market wants porn, and more porn than you could
    ever deliver in 500 years.

    What a great world. Yippee!

  8. Thanks everyone for your comments!

The best I can do is to try and protect the kids from what they don’t need to be looking at…which is going to be a challenge!

  10. I agree, porn is the biggest benefactor of the internet. But it’s just like anything else. If people want it, others will supply it. I have a porn blocker on my router so that none of the pc’s in my house can access adult content without a password so I don’t have to worry about the kids finding it from some innocuous looking link.

  12. Hi Michael,
    How true….
Porn blocker on the router? Hmmm…something I’ll have to look into. I would assume that is a feature built into later model routers? I spent a couple of hours today on the phone with my ISP, and it reminded me of how old some of my equipment is!
Thanks for your comment and for dropping by!

  14. The problem is that its everywhere. And filters can’t stop everything. It’s just another responsibility that parents and employers have to worry with.

A great tool to help you detect porn is SurfRecon. Fast, confidential, and safe.

  16. I agree that sex is popular on the internet, but I am not sure how much of it sells these days. It seems that there is so much free sex, and free love for that matter, that sex is hard to sell. I guess it is reminiscent of the 60′s free love, and lack of popular STDs – it must have been tough for a prostitute back then! LOL

I always suggest people have filtering software in their computers if they have kids, and always suggest they inquire about the safety of the computers at friends’ houses by talking with their parents. I also talk to parents about any gaming consoles they have such as ps3, and I have talked to my cell phone company about keeping adult web stuff of the phones.

Of course I make sure my daughter knows that she can talk to me about anything and everything, without embarrassment, so I don’t have to be concerned that she will search out sex information without me.

  20. I wish that they would but all porn on it’s own extension like .xxx. How easy they would it for parents and businesses (and especially our government ) to block porn from getting into the wrong eyes?

I remember when the government was talking about doing the move to .xxx and a politician said something to the effect that that would make it too easy to find porn. Too easy to find porn? For goodness sake, Whitehouse dot com is porn!
