I Really Like Using Artisteer!

February 25, 2010 by

I use both WordPress and Drupal quite a bit for websites I build.  I love these content management systems, (CMS), because #1…they’re free.  And #2…they have so much support.  There are tons of “plugins” for WordPress and “modules” for Drupal.

Something else I love about them is if you don’t like the way your blog or website looks, you simply change the “theme”.  There are a lot of free themes available or you can purchase custom made themes.  While I like the ability to use the free themes that are available, I also had a desire at times to “create my own” website look.  Unfortunately, I knew absolutely NOTHING about themeing for WordPress or Drupal, and didn’t really have a desire to learn.  Well…I had the desire, I just didn’t want to take the time to learn it.

So then a “web designer” friend turned me on to Artisteer.  He had been using it to create themes for some sites he was working on and was really impressed with it.  The first time I used it I was hooked!  It makes it SOOOO easy to create my own themes!

It’s really cool because you have so much control over the theme.  Color schemes, blocks and image placements, menu’s, sheet layout’s, sidebar placements and on and on!  For those of us who wanted a custom theme but didn’t want to learn CSS, it’s a dream come true!

I will say that the software has felt a little cumbersome at times.  Part of that is just the sheer amount of options that are available to you.  It can be a bit overwhelming.  But the more you use it, the easier it all becomes.

After saying all this, I have to admit that the theme that I’m using for chrishoyt.com was NOT created with Artisteer.  I was using this theme before I purchased Artisteer and I really like it for this blog.  But…when it comes time for a change, I’ll no doubt be using this software.

Give it a test drive.  There is a demo you can watch on the site and you can actually download and use the software but I believe it puts a watermark on the themes until you actually purchase the software.  It gives you a chance to try it and see if you like it.

Let me know what you think.

  2. Looks like a very good software. I would love it if this is a no-brainer thingy and assists you as you go along with the design you want. I dread reading hundreds of lines of manual. This should be the answer to most of our design needs. Sometimes you come across another site with the same theme as yours and it isn’t very appealing to know that.

  4. Most CMS’s won’t be able to use an html page though. It’s more likely to need the template to be in something like aspx. Dream weaver can still edit/create these templates no problem.

  10. we’ve poked around in Joomla a bit, though I’ve yet to be convinced it has much to recommend it over WP & Drupal. My impressions of it (though admittedly, my experience has been quite limited) have been that it’s a bit finnicky to install & configure compared to WordPress, and it doesn’t seem to have the flexibility or feature richness of Drupal.

  26. I was really interested in this until I saw the word “purchase”! Since I don’t yet make any money from my online efforts I have decided to be very careful what I spend money on – while this sounds like a great idea, it will have to wait a while – I’ve added it to my list of things to buy when I start making some cash!!

I am going to do the demo though – and then will probably like it so much, i end up paying for it anyway……

  94. I have use Artisteer for two projects until now and it is really easy to use. Especially for Drupal for whitch its difficult to find nice themes it was pretty cool…BUT…I have to say that themes created with this software are quite difficult to change by hand, e.g. when you want to insert a special menu.

I would recommend it if you don’t want to build more complex websites.

  106. Hello,

I have been using Drupal and WordPress for a long time also… I now prefer WordPress as I always got very nervous when teh drupal updates were due..

I have also been using Artisteer for about a year now and I like the ease of it and if you can find people to do good custom headers then you are on to a winner.

I have been using artisteer to build sites for my offline clients and they love how good it is.

However like anything it does have its limits

I share the same problem of knowing nothing about designing and used to have a hard time doing so… It was with the advent of CMS such as Joomla, PHP Fusion, etc that life became so much simpler… I also found a few sites offering very proffesional ready made themes for Joomla etc… But to try and create one yourself is sure a thing I would wanna try! Artisteer would sure be worth a try :)

I have used it to make some websites and what I like most about it is that it not only makes WordPress themes but it can also output the site design in regular HTML format so that you could use it as a static site. The designs you can make are pretty basic though. You won’t get a really advanced site out of Artisteer.
