Why I’ve Changed My Homepage

My the homepage on my computer at home has been set to CNN for the last few years. The radio station in any of our vehicles I’ve been driving has been set to NPR. I’ve been wondering lately, why I’ve been so “down in the dumps”? Not really depressed or anything, but just generally felt uneasy or stressed a little bit. Then it became clear what my problem was!

After the Virginia Tech shootings last week, I turned on my computer and my homepage pops up with this image. I look at this picture and I start thinking to myself, “this is whats wrong with me”! I had become a “news junkie” and guess what? For the most part, the news is very depressing! All I’ve been thinking about lately is global warming and what my daughter and her kids have to look forward to in life. I can only hope that her generation will be smarter than those that preceded her.

And if it’s not global warming, it’s terrorism, it’s school shootings, it’s child molesters, another hundred people killed in Iraq. It’s Darfur, Iran, North Korea. Let’s face it…the news is downright depressing!

So I made some changes in my life. Here is my new homepage. And I download podcasts from this website and listen to them on my commutes to or from, or while I’m at work. I’m trying to avoid as much contact with the “regular news” as possible. And guess what?!?! My attitude has had an amazing turnaround! Bad things are still happening in this world, but I’m trying not to focus on them. And plastering pictures of this dumbass all over the Jerk Off internet doesn’t help. My guess is his notoriety will only produce copycats. Thats the biggest problem I have with the news today. They sensationalize someone like this when they should have barely mentioned his name and then published stories about the victims and the heroic acts that went on that day. If he really wanted some attention, he should have infiltrated a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan and wiped them all out! He would have had most of the world patting him on the back!

So anyway…I’m trying to make some positive changes and get back to enjoying all the good things in life. There are still plenty of good times to be had if you don’t spend all your time learning about the bad.
